IT WAS 47 YEARS AGO TODAY: CANDLESTICK PARK, FINAL BEATLES STADIUMS CONCERT

It was the end of an era: The Beatles, who changed the live-music industry by playing at ballparks and stadiums, performed live for the last time, at San Francisco's Candlestick Park.
The August 29, 1966 event wasn't billed as a final concert -- though the Beatles had decided it was days before -- and it wasn't the biggest success, with the Beatles attracting only 25,000 paying customers to Candlestick Park, which held 42,500 (before the outfield seating was built in). The team's last song played live: "Long Tall Sally."

The band played American ballparks and stadiums for only a year over two tours: the first Shea Stadium concert was on August 15, 1965, and was the beginning of a 10-stop tour that also saw the band play at Chicago's Comiskey Park, Bloomington's Metropolitan Stadium and Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. (Yes, the four ballparks the Beatles played in 1965 are all gone.)

The 1966 tour saw the band play at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, Washington, D.C.'s D.C. Stadium (now known at JFK Stadium), St. Louis's Busch Stadium, Shea Stadium, Dodger Stadium and the aforementioned Candlestick Park. A few other stadiums were in the mix, but they weren't related to baseball, like a concert at San Diego's Balboa Stadium.
A concert at Cincinnati's Crosley Field was scrapped because of rain.

Since the Beatles, ballpark concerts have become an important part of the music industry. What is commonplace today was considered daring at the time. Still, ballpark concerts are still major events: it was big when Paul helped close down Shea Stadium and opened Citi Field, and it's big when a major artist like Kenny Chesney brings over 44,000 fans to Target Field.

PAUL RELEASES THE FIRST SINGLE: "NEW" FROM HIS FORTHCOMING ALBUM

Paul, releases the first single, New, from his forthcoming album of the same name, and hints at UK tour dates.

Paul will release a new album, called New, in October 2013 Photo: Mary McCartney
Paul has released a new single, called New, ahead of the release of his first album of completely new solo material in six years.
The 71-year-old's latest track is produced by British DJ Mark Ronson, who has previously collaborated with Amy Winehouse and Duran Duran.
New is a jaunty, Beatles-esque stomp topped with undulating Beach Boys harmonising and Sir Paul's familiar, if now slightly croaky, voice.
The song's lyrics appear to pay tribute to Paul's wife, Nancy Shevell: "All my life I never knew what I could be / what I could do / till we were new," the former Beatle sings.
The song is taken from Paul's forthcoming album, also called New, which will be released on October 14. The record, which will include 12 songs, will be the singer-songwriter's first album of new material since 2007's Memory Almost Full, which reached number five in the British charts. Sir Paul's last album, 2012's Kisses on the Bottom, featured covers of jazz and pop standards.
The New album features several different producers, including Ronson, Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Laura Marling) and Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence and the Machine). Talking about making the album on BBC Radio 2 this morning, Sir Paul said:
"The songs are quite varied. I was going to do one song with each producer and see who I got on with best but I got on with all of them.
"Paul Epworth is more, 'let's make it up', Ethan is more acoustically inclined."
"Before we went on the road I had a bit of time, so I started writing it then. I would drop my youngest daughter off at school then I would have a few hours, so that became a bit of a routine," he added.

Sir Paul also admitted that he would like to perform live dates in the UK to promote the album.

"We've only got planned out the Japanese dates at the moment and we haven't got anything planned after that... but I always like to finish the year in the UK. This is a new show so I'd love to show people – I like to show off."

BEATLES’ SECRETARY FREDA KELLY FINALLY BREAKS HER SILENCE

Beatles’ secretary Freda Kelly finally breaks her silence: Protecting John Lennon’s affairs, sleeping at Ringo Starr’s house

When Freda Kelly, just a shy Liverpool teen, signed on to work for a local band with big dreams she had no idea she would soon hold the most coveted secretarial position in the world. While history observes that the Beatles were together for 10 years, Kelly served them for 11 – managing the Fab Four’s fan club and handling tasks even after they broke up in 1970. As more than just an employee, Kelly had a front-row seat through Beatlemania, the rise to stardom, and the ups and downs of one of the greatest bands in history.
But it is only now, more than five decades since manager Brian Epstein brought her into the fold as a mild-mannered, sweet and smiling secretary that “Good ol’ Freda” – as she was affectionately referred to by Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr – has broken her silence about life as the Beatles’ go-to girl.
“Over the last 50 years, Freda has had many offers to tell her story, but this is the first time she has agreed. With the birth of her only grandson, Freda realized the importance of passing on the testimony of her life’s work,” director Ryan White, a family friend to Kelly, told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “Going on record was a big leap of faith for her. By nature, Freda is a very private person.”
A film, titled “Good ol’ Freda,” was financed through crowd funding site Kickstarter, which raised almost $60,000 from 660 backers. McCartney even gave his blessing to the project, approving the licensing of four original Beatles songs – something that seldom happens in film – and audiences are able to visually feast on never-before-seen photographs.
Kelly basically gave away all her memorabilia (likely worth millions now) to desperate and devastated fans in 1974. She went above and beyond during her time to ensure that fans were given the real deal. That involved sneaking threads from McCartney’s shirts, arranging for hair snippets and making sure Starr really did sleep on a pillowcase before returning it to an overjoyed fan – but apparently she drew the line at fulfilling requests to send along fingernail clippings. So intent on being honest, the secretary once let go of a whole crew of assistants who were exposed for trying to pass off a girl’s hair for that of a Beatle.
And while Kelly admits she doesn’t have a favorite Beatle – one week she was in love with Lennon and the next she was closest to McCartney – she developed a particularly deep connection to Starr’s family.
“We filmed in Freda’s living room for weeks and then we went back to locations where a lot of these things happened. A lot came out when we went to Ringo’s childhood home. She took care of his parents as if they were her own,” the director continued. “She talked about everything from the first time she and Ringo’s mom went to find her a wedding dress, and what it was like the first time they saw a lava lamp.”
And as candid as Kelly became throughout the filming process, there was still one topic in particular that was off-limits.
“I asked if she dated any of the Beatles,” White said. “And she stared me down in her charming way.”
Kelly does, however, confess to zipping her lips about such things as Lennon’s wandering eyes while married to college sweetheart, Cynthia Powell. Yet she had no qualms about putting the boys’ in their place when the occasion called for it.
“Freda is never going to toot her own horn, she will say she was in the right place at the right time,” White said. “But no other person could do that job the way she did it.”
But despite her Pandora’s Box of memories and madness, Kelly remains fearlessly loyal to the band that paid her way for over a decade, and isn’t interested in her own 15 minutes of fame – she never sold her stories, or wrote a tell-all book or even granted interview documenting her experiences.  Still a secretary to this day at a mental health law firm in Liverpool, even her closest co-workers, friends and family had no idea about her interesting work history.
“Freda is baffled about why people care so much about a secretary,” White added. “Her daughter came up to me after a screening and said 95 percent of what her mother told were things she hadn’t even heard before.”
“Good ol’ Freda” opens in select theaters and will be available on iTunes and Video-On-Demand September 6.

STRAWBERRY FIELDS GATES PAINTED YELLOW

Mystery message daubed on iconic tourist attraction

The Strawberry Fields gates part-painted yellow
The famous red gates to Strawberry Field have been painted yellow.
The top half of one of the famous gates to the former children's home in Woolton - made famous by Beatles song Strawberry Fields Forever - has been painted yellow and the phrase "There is always a field for imagination. John you know you should be glad" has been painted on the wall.
Resident Denis Murphy said he noticed the damage as he was driving past this afternoon.
He said: "It is awful. As I was driving past there was a bus full of tourists pulling up and they had to see that.
"The paint's been thrown all over the gate and there's yellow writing which has been painted on the wall.
"There have been lots of Beatles fans in Woolton village after the music festival at the weekend and it looks really bad.

"It's a busy main road, I don't know how someone could have done this and not been spotted.

Y tenemos que lidiar unos con otros. Imagínese trabajar con los Beatles, es difícil. Sólo hay tensión. Es tenso cada vez que la luz roja se enciende”.

LETTERS FROM JOHN'S KILLER TO BE SOLD - VIDEO

In his time as a New York City police officer, Stephen Spiro says that it only happened to him once.
Typically, the people he arrested wanted nothing to do with him.

But then, few things about the case of Mark David Chapman were typical.

Chapman, the man convicted of killing John, wrote Spiro, his arresting officer, four letters.

In the letters, Chapman repeatedly tells Spiro to read "The Catcher in the Rye," saying the book would explain much of what happened the night of the murder, December 8, 1980.

He expresses an ease with the officer, saying he hoped they could be friends, that he thought Spiro was a great policeman, and that he had felt close to him ever since his arrest.

Chillingly, Chapman also wrote that others "could -- and would -- have served the same purpose" as Lennon.

The four letters are expected to go on sale Monday on the Moments in Time website, which sells rare autographs and historical documents.

Spiro says they represent the only time someone he arrested wrote him letters.

"They've been in my possession for 30 years, and I'm 66 years old, and I'm saying, you know, what am I going to do with these things? So I figured I'd sell them," he told CNN.

The letters run from January to May 1983. Each one is typed and includes Chapman's signature.

Spiro says he wrote a few letters in return, but Chapman "cut it off after a while."

The two men spent several hours together immediately after Chapman's arrest. He trusted Spiro.

Chapman, who was denied parole for the seventh time in August, is serving a sentence of 20 years to life.

The letters will be on sale for $75,000, said Gary Zimet, who runs the Moments in Time site.

The site is also selling a "Double Fantasy" record album, which Lennon signed for Chapman before his murder, for $650,000.

Spiro said that he plans to donate some of the money he makes to a local shelter for battered women.

Here are excerpts from Chapman's letters:

January 15, 1983

" ... I am glad that we can keep in touch. I'll not forget the first time we met ...

"Besides wanting to be your friend, there are two reasons for this first letter. First, is there any way that you can help me locate my copy of The Catcher in the Rye that was taken from me on the night of my arrest? Second, in the patrol car on the way to the stationhouse, I remember you telling your partner -- very excitedly -- that you KNEW something big was going to happen to you on that evening. Do you remember this? I would like you to tell me more of this if possible.

"Steven, have you read The Catcher in the Rye yet? I would like you to read it and tell me what you think of it. As you remember, in the copy that was taken from me I had written 'This is my statement'. I am wondering if you now understand this.

"Write soon. Let me know how you're doing. As I've said before, you're probably still the 'best damn cop in New York City'. "

January 28, 1983

"... The reason I wanted to write was from the time of my arrest I have felt close to you ...

"To answer your question of what was meant by 'This is my statement', the only way I can explain is this way: do you remember the young woman in Saigon during the Vietnam war that immolated herself? ... She believed so strongly in her purpose that she chose to end her life rather than to continue living in this phony world ...

"The Cather in the Rye is my statement. The book in incredible ...

"We were all part of something big, Steve. Something phenomenal. It is all going to come out."

March 10, 1983

"... You mentioned your family. Tell me about your children. How about a photo, too?

"Have you read The Catcher in the Rye yet? I know this will help you to further understand ...

"I will let you decide whether Mr. Lennon was a phony or not. His words shoot his life-purpose full of holes. If you dig deep -- and not idolize -- it is all there. Yes, Lennon was a phony of highest degree but there were others who could -- and would -- have served the same purpose. I believe the DA has these names."

May 31, 1983

"Read The Catcher in the Rye.
"Sincerely, Mark David Chapman."
