Paul McCartney at 70:
musician sees out his 60s with romantic getaway
Sir Paul McCartney celebrates his 70th birthday
today after seeing out his 60s with a romantic Italian getaway.
Sir Paul and wife Nancy Shevell spent the weekend
at an estate near Siena
The former Beatle spent the
weekend with his wife, Nancy Shevell, at the five-star Castiglion del Bosco
estate in Montalcino, near Siena.
The couple flew to Rome by
private jet before making their way to the estate, which features 2,500 sq-ft
private villas with views across the Tuscan countryside. It is owned by Massimo
Ferragamo, the fashion magnate, and the dress code is defined as “rural chic”.
A hotel employee said that
the couple spent two nights at the estate, which has its own winery and organic
kitchen garden.
Sir Paul and his wife are
expected to spend this evening back in London where they will host a party for
close friends and family.
The musician told “The
Daily Telegraph” last week that the celebration would be low-key because
“big dos aren’t really me”. When he married Miss Shevell in October last year,
the reception was held in the garden of his house in St John’s Wood, north-west
London.
Their choice of holiday destination was also
low-profile, as villas at Castiglion del Bosco is well-hidden from the
paparazzi. They cost up to £2,500 per night - small change for a couple with an
estimated joint fortune of £665 million.
Mr Ferragamo bought the
Montalcino estate in 2003 and began a restoration project with such attention
to detail that sand for the 18-hole golf course was transported from Germany
because local sand was not deemed a perfect colour match for the surroundings.
After the birthday celebrations are over, Sir Paul
will return to work. He has been chosen to perform at the London 2012 opening
ceremony on July 27.
