PAUL WATCHED BEACH VOLLEYBALL

LONDON — Bruce Springsteen played over the speakers while Sir Paul McCartney watched from the bleachers. Throw in some sand, a few bikinis and a lot of dancing and what you have is Rio de Janeiro on Downing St.

Beach volleyball is the all-day, all-night party disguised as an Olympic event and one of the toughest tickets at the London Games, unless you are a Beatle, of course. There were sellout crowds on Day 1 of the men’s and women’s competition, which is being played inside a makeshift stadium on Horse Guards Parade, a few feet from the official residence of British Prime Minister David Cameron.
